For the Spring Summer 2012 Menswear, Bottega Veneta’s creative director Tomas Maier created yet another luxurious collection that has become a signature for the brand. Drawing his inspiration from the Arabian culture, he designed a whole collection that reflected the theme of a single piece of clothing ‘that works for a man the way a dress does for a woman’.

Maier ingeniously created this ‘one piece’ silhouette with monochromatic top and bottoms, and every piece (mostly suits) precisely cut and streamlined, such as tapered pants, narrow shoulders, fitted sleeves and a band or mandarin collar. The result – a sophisticated silhouette that is neat , slim and fitted to the body. The color palette are primarily calm and warm, comprised of dark shades including espresso, chocolate, blue tourmaline, and indigo mixed with neutral shades like biege, pewter and Sahara. Contrasting to these is a surface textured with prints layered over prints, geometric patterns fused together, and materials mixed, patched, or cut apart and reformed.

I’ve always liked the idea of a coverall or a jumpsuit, of a single piece of clothing that works for a man the way a dress does for a woman,” explains Creative Director Tomas Maier. “But a tailored jumpsuit is impractical. So we started with the idea of an all-in-one and related it to the suit. The look is very sharp and covered up, with almost no skin revealed. This contrasts with the unusual surfaces of the materials. It’s a different kind of suit, derived from thinking about dressing in a different way.- Tomas Maier

Materials are lightweight and range from cotton twill and linen-and-cotton twill to piqué, seersucker, denim, leather, and jersey. And of course, we cannot forget about the coveted bags and accessories that Bottega Veneta are so famous for. The SS12 bags are multi-functional and and incredibly soft, going perfectly with the relaxed mood if the collection. On closer inspection are the elaborated hand-crafted surface and layering strips of colors on some signature must-have pieces.
