A friend of mine posted a movie trailer clip on Facebook a few months back and it brought my attention to this movie called “Jump! Ashin”, starring Taiwanese actor Eddie Peng Yu Yan (彭于晏). My earlier impression of Eddie was that of a young Taiwanese actor with boyish good look, a teeny-idol actor. However, watching the movie trailer completely changed my impression of him and made him a lead character actor. The movie was released last month in Taiwan and Eddie was on the cover of Men’s Uno (Taiwan) August issue, plus a story and fashion spread about him. (See Gallery)

About Eddie Peng : 彭于晏

Borned in 1982, Eddie grew up in Canada, Eddie Peng has a boyish good look and an open personality which attracts the Taiwanese audience. He has starred in many TV shows and movies since 2002 propelled to fame with his Taiwanese/Korean crossover lead role in Scent of Love. He further expanded his audience base with his role as Tang Yu in Chinese Paladin, which exposed him to the Chinese market. After he finished shooting for Shao Nian Yang Jia Jiang, he turned his attention to the big screen with the movie like “Exit No. 6.” and “Close to you” etc.. He was also nominated for 2 Golden Bell award in 2006 and 2007 for his role in Only you and Wayward Kenting.

With such good looks and a line-up of important roles in movies for Eddie, he is definitely someone to look out for in the Asian entertainment (and fashion) circle.

About Jump! Ashin《翻滚吧!阿信》

The movie tells the true life story of Taiwanese national gymnast Ashin (played by Eddie Peng). Ashin grew up in his hometown of Yilan and started learning and training gymnastics at very young age.  However, his mother thinks joining the sports does not give him any benefit and asks the coach to remove him from the team. Soon after, Ashin became rebellious and started to get into trouble and gang fights. So much trouble that he flees to Taipei to run away from some gang leaders. It is a story about loss, redemption and coming-of-age as Ashin slowly found his direction and heads back home determined to pursue his dream in gymnastics again.

Playing Ashin, Eddie Peng shines best not through words, but through his movement, captured with precise cinematography and artful martial arts direction. He also deserves praise for the fact that he underwent 12 hours of training a day for three months and transformed himself from a Canada-educated young idol to an Yilan taike (台客) who speaks Hokkein (or Taiwanese dialect), does backflips and sports a solid six-pack abs. The transformation is simply remarkable. (see the movie trailer and movie stills below.)

I am hoping that they will bring this movie to Singapore very soon.
